About The Astor

The Astor is a downtown tavern for the public, where dining, drinking, and performance come together under one roof. Honoring The Public Theater's storied legacy and wrapped in an old New York charm, it pairs Chef Andrew Carmellini's kitchen with a refined classic cocktail program.

Designed by Serge Becker, the space builds on a nearly three-decade creative partnership between NoHo Hospitality and The Public Theater that began with the opening of Joe's Pub in 1998. Becker launched that room alongside Josh Pickard, Paul Salmon and Kevin Abbott; Andrew Carmellini and Luke Ostrom joined Pickard in the years since. Nearly three decades on, the six partners carry the collaboration into its next chapter.

At the center of The Astor, a monumental new mural by artist André Carrilho brings generations of The Public Theater together in one sweeping work. Featuring 32 figures who have shaped the institution and New York's cultural landscape, among them Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alicia Keys, David Byrne and Tony Kushner, the mural places artists across disciplines and generations in conversation, creating a visual history that anchors the heart of the space.
